How To Recognize Pre Diabetes and What You Can Do About It

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t know much about prediabetes. And that’s OK! Unless, of course, you have it. In which case, you should definitely read this blog post. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about prediabetes: what it is, how to recognize it, and whether or not it’s reversible. So sit back, relax, and learn a little something about this important topic. Who knows? You might just save yourself from a lot of heartaches (and doctor’s visits) down the road.

You may have been told that you’re pre-diabetic or your family members are. Now come the questions such as:

What is prediabetes?

Is there a cure?

Is it reversible?

What does it mean for my health?

Prediabetes is a condition before full-blown diabetes. Your fasting blood sugar level can range from 100mg/dL – 125mg/dL. In an average of three months blood sugar goes up from 5.2 -5.6 points. Anytime you cross 6.4 – 6.5 points, you will become a full-blown diabetic. That means you have started to show insulin resistance. Your blood sugar levels stay high, especially the fasting ones.

Especially when you’re fasting and you don’t have enough insulin and are insulin resistant, your insulin is not working to control your blood sugar. Your cells are full of sugar and cannot hold any more sugar. That is the meaning of pre-diabetes.

How can you tell if you have prediabetes?

Get checked. You can check your fasting blood sugar levels for the last three months, and in particular hemoglobin A1C. This is an important indicator because it’ll tell you what kind of sugars have been going on with respect to diabetes or pre-diabetes over this time period.

What are the symptoms of prediabetes?

You may have no symptoms at all, or you could gain weight and feel more tired than usual. You also risk hormonal changes that can affect your moods in unpredictable ways.

How does it progress to type two diabetes?

If you don’t do anything about it and you continue to eat the same way, the same lifestyle, then your blood insulin levels will keep on increasing. Insulin receptors will continue to not work with that insulin. Remember that they are resistant to insulin. If your blood sugar levels keep on increasing to where you finally go above 120 mg/dL – 125mg/dL, or your A1C goes above 6.4, then you become a diabetic.

Can prediabetes be reversed through diet and exercise?

Absolutely. With the right lifestyle choices, it is possible to overcome pre-diabetes. The key lies in eating healthy foods that don’t raise your blood sugar and keeping insulin levels down through intelligent nutrition habits like choosing low glycemic index items when possible or consuming more fruits than processed sugars if you must have something sweet.

Eating more high-quality healthy fats, like avocado, nut butter, nuts, fatty fish, ghee (clarified butter), and coconut oil to name a few. 50% of your diet should be healthy fats and the remaining 50% should include 30% lean proteins and 20% percent consists of carbohydrates. Eat plenty of vegetables and cut back on the fruit. Some people think that fruits are healthy, but when you are in prediabetes, you have increased your blood sugar in a different way.

What should you avoid eating if you have prediabetes?

Avoid eating fast food. Fast food is bad for your health. It’s high in glycemic index and contains refined flours, sugar as well as starchy white potatoes which can be replaced with wild rice if you have access to it.

How much exercise should you need to do to reverse prediabetes?

You should have a healthy exercise routine of at least 45 minutes to an hour. Whether you walk or run, lift weights, you can divide it between cardio and weight lifting or yoga. Spending at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily is going to be favorable for you.
