FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NEUROFEEDBACK
How Does Neurofeedback Help?
Neurofeedback sessions involve relaxing for 30 minutes while you watch a movie or video of your choice. Sensors are lightly attached to your scalp to measure your brainwave patterns during the training session. When imbalances in the brainwave patterns are measured, the training software creates a change in the audio and visual inputs. In response, your brain senses the change, and the brainwave patterns change to a healthier balance, bringing the video back into focus. Over time, your brain learns to stay within healthy ranges on its own, without neurofeedback.
What’s My First Step?
Call our office at 832-246-8437 or click here to schedule your free initial evaluation. Dr Malhotra will answer any questions you may have, and will determine if neurofeedback training is appropriate for your unique situation. Following this, if you both agree that neurofeedback is a good fit, the next step is to get a brain map, or qEEG. The test takes about 30 minutes, and the results are used to set up your personal protocol to address the symptoms you are experiencing. After that, the actual training begins. Neurofeedback training sessions are typically done twice a week for 30 minutes at a time.
How Many Training Sessions Are Typically Needed?
This varies with each person. Much like going to the gym, every patient will need a different length of time to improve. However, on average, 20 – 40 sessions is typical for most conditions to improve.
Are The Effects Of Neurofeedback Long Lasting?
That`s one of the key benefits to this technology. Long term follow-ups have been done on many patients over the years. A study performed by Dr. Joel Lubar at the University of Tennessee followed ADD patients that showed sustained improvements from neurofeedback fully 20 years after their last training session.
Does Insurance Pay For Neurofeedback?
In many cases, neurofeedback is a reimbursable expense if performed in our office.
Will The Training Affect My Personality?
No. Neurofeedback training sessions are designed to help your brain develop new, healthier neuronal pathways. It can help you to be more resilient to day-to-day stress, decrease anxiety or depression, and even help you think more clearly overall. It will not change your interests, hobbies, or personality. It will just make it easier for you to live your best life!
Does Neurofeedback Interfere With My Medications?
Neurofeedback training is a natural process. As a result, there are no side effects, allowing you to continue with your medication regimen. Over time, our goal is to work with you and your prescribing physician to determine if you may be able to reduce or eliminate medications, based on your results.
